In a statement that he may regret once he starts getting pestered about it on a regular basis, Casey Hudson Bioware’s executive producer has told game informer
“A lot of people say that they want to see an MMO, I think that kind of makes sense for this universe.
Now to put this statement into context, he was talking about the possibility of multi-player in both Mass Effect and Bioware games in general.
“We haven’t yet come up with a way to do that, so we don’t have anything to announce at this time. But, obviously, multi-player is something we want to do more of in the future as a company.”
The Mass Effect world is well suited for an MMO, and wouldn’t really require any additional information for character classes as these have already been established in the Mass Effect games and accompanying books. For example, based on existing lore; play as Krogan and be a mercenary for hire, a quarian on their pilgrimage, align with the Blue Suns or Blood Pack, join the Terra Firma party, be pro or anti-human, join C-Sec. There are endless possibilities.
A Mass Effect MMO could be brilliant, but realistically I doubt it will happen anytime soon. Bioware have been working on Star Wars The Old Republic for a number of years and it still doesn’t have a release date and even IF someone was already working on a Mass Effect MMO behind the scenes it wouldn’t make business sense to launch two MMO’s close together as it would ultimately split the audience. However it could be argued that without Star Wars The Knights of the Old Republic there would be no Mass Effect, so it isn’t illogical to assume that after The Old Republic is released that Bioware could start work on a Mass Effect MMO using the skills developed when creating the Star Wars MMO.
I hope that Bioware does create a Mass Effect MMO, I just don’t expect to see it before 2015 which raises its own complications as by 2015 development on the Xbox 720 and the Playstation 4 would have already begun which could push back any release until the console is ready. This is all speculation of course so feel free to add your own thoughts below.
On a related note, Bioware please don’t shoehorn in a generic player vs player shooter into Mass Effect 3, I know you want to add multi-player but that isn’t the way to go.
