Just when you think things can’t get any worse for Sony, and, more importantly, their customers, Sony have revealed that some credit and debit card details have in fact been compromised. In a statement issued on their website they confirm that while there is still no evidence that their main database has been accessed, a secondary ‘outdated’ database containing approximately 12,700 non-US customer credit or debit card numbers and 10,700 direct debit details (including bank account numbers) has been breached.
On the plus side GamesIndustry.biz has since received confirmation from Sony that only 900 of those cards are still active. More worrying perhaps are the bank account numbers, which are unlikely to have changed, and in light of this I half expect Sony to come back in a few days and say that actually the main credit card database has been accessed too, but maybe that’s just me being cynical. Only time will tell.
