E3 2011: Cloud Storage Coming To Xbox LIVE

As well as everything they revealed at their E3 conference from earlier today, Microsoft have just confirmed that they will be rolling out cloud storage in the next dashboard update. This could mean the end of carrying around a memory card/ USB stick with your save games very soon. It will also mean that you will no longer have to recover your gamertag if you forgot to bring your memory card with you to a friends house, which was becoming a longer exercise as our gamertags grew in size over time.

Let’s hand it over to the extract from the press release confirming this news. Do you see this as a good thing or has the recent hacking of PSN made you concerned with cloud storage?

Cloud Storage for Game Saves and LIVE Profile. Here at Xbox LIVE we listen to your feedback. We are making it easier for you to sign into your Xbox LIVE account from any console at any time to access your game saves and full profile, including items such as Microsoft Points to make purchases, Achievements and friends. Cloud storage will allow you to enjoy the same great Xbox LIVE gaming experience even when you’re not in your own living room by giving you the option to store your “game saves” securely in the Xbox LIVE cloud instead of on a portable memory unit or your console’s hard drive. Gone are the days of “gamertag recovery.” Now all you need to do is sign in, no matter where you are!

With currently technological developments that have led to a more widespread usage in cloud computing, it’s not surprising that its functions are expanding to things like the Xbox. This will make the lives of video gamers a little more convenient.

I like this. Having XBL save the newest saves of all my game is nice and gives some security, it worries me that my entire console gaming career can die with one harddrive crash. Im not too concerned about my data, if XBL gets hacked its my credit card number im concerned about not my game saves, and as long as they cant delete the saves off my drive from I see nothing to fear.

Good to see this coming after the XBL price hike, PSN Plus offers this so im glad MS does now  too.
