Previews, Do They Spoil Our Games?

Previews, we all read them, it’s what keeps us motivated into buying a game. It’s a common piece of info in today’s times, but do you guys think that sometimes developers give too much away when they release new information about a game? Personally I believe that sometimes they do. But this is a personal opinion, of course other gamers love the previews and it builds anticipation for the game, which I understand. I’d like to use one of the more recent, and personal favorite game, as an example of when is it too much, inFAMOUS 2.

Why couldn't we get this Box Art?

I have been a crazy fan of the first inFAMOUS game, so when news about the second game started to show up in the media I was super excited. I read the first few articles of the game, and saw 3 trailers in total, then I noticed that too much info started to pour out. So I backed away from well known gaming websites so the game would not be spoiled for me. As I stated before hand, people love these articles full of information but by the time the actual game comes out they already know half of the plot, and half of the things that were meant to be really awesome and surprising, so they kinda loose their shine. Because of all these previews and screenshots, it looses all the excitement that the game is meant to have. Take the article from IGN where it describes the powers and effects of Cole, including some of the bigger badder powers called Ionic Powers. It’s things like that, where it makes me want to avoid these kind of articles. In then end, once we end up with game it looses the ”wow” factor, the excitement of not knowing what power comes next, or what characters you will meet. Instead we find ourselves in front of the screen knowing what part comes next.

I understand that developers have to give out information, and new screenshots to keep consumers interested in their product, but sometimes its a little too much. At least for me, in some aspects. There are times when I’m really curious about a game, and I will read every preview that is out there, and watch every single video released. Maybe it depends on the game, a game such as inFAMOUS with such interesting plot, and characters, I really wanted to play the game and not know anything that was going to happen next.

So in conclusion, I do believe that sometimes way too much information is given out, but of course it all depends on us the readers and consumers. But it’s a matter of opinion, but I do want to see what you guys have to say about it. Have you ever wanted a game and part of the plot line was spoiled for you during a preview?     Before Elder Scrolls: Oblivion came out I completely immersed myself in every detail, I read every story, watched every gameplay video and trailer. When the game came out I was still amazing awed by it and loved the game. In that case I was still very excited to play the game and still really enjoyed it. However usually thats not how it works out, but I dont know if thats due to the nature of previews or just the way they are presented. 

    I think the real issue is that previews are never critical. Almost all previews are universally positive and overindulgent to the point where they become lies. The game developers will often detail systems and mechanics far before they have been implemented and finalized and the final product on the shelf will be much different. Crysis, Far Cry 2, and Spore are good examples of this. Most journalists who got to play these games early did not question what they were being told about the game despite not seeing the info being reflected in actual game play. This led to over inflated expectations that could never be met because the actual game was not providing them. 

    Previews of Spore describe a game that is much more complex then whats on the disc I own. Spore is in fact an incredibly shallow and simple set of games, and not the “everything simulator” it was often billed as. 

    If previews of games were more critical and thoughtful, and not just a write up of the press releases I dont think this problem would exist.

    I agree with you there, however, the article listed from IGN described all Ionic Powers which are the best in the game. I mean that’s kinda of a big spoiler there.

  • I agree as well. I find myself hiding from magazines and videos just to avoid some big plot spoilers. Plus in games like L.A noire, the preview or review of a game can give away a spot of evidence and although it makes it easier, it’s just not the same

    The key thing is to maintain yourself. Yes you’re excited and want to absorb every ounce of information that is released but as you stated if you take in too much you take the risk of ruing a surprising plot twist or a “OMGWTF” moment that occurs when you gain a new ability or area. The reason so much is released is that for some it takes more than the title and some flashy screen shots to hook them. Not everyone plays the initial titles or follow games as others and they need more information to convince them that the game will not suck, and by doing so they release torrents of information but with the thought that if those excited and don’t need as much convincing will simply not read on. The game is only as ruin as you allow it to be. Take me for instance, I’m pumped for the 2nd installment in the Demon Souls series, “Dark Souls”. I’ve been following tweets, watching e3, reading faqs and demo reports and because of my persistence I now know a way to beat a mini boss that has killed a bunch of others. The fun of games like Dark Souls is the figuring out part, the investigation and the trial and error, as a gamer you take it upon yourself to decide how much to take in and how much to just not read. It’s hard, it’s like placing an addictive substance in front of a junkie and saying, “Look but if you touch your hands will explode”. The temptation is just too great for some, but self control is key.
