Welcome to Buy This, Not That. In this golden era of instant gratification and downloadable games, we must be ever vigilant of crappy games that would take our well-earned cash. The aim of the Buy This, Not That is to help you, the aspiring game connoisseur, play great games and save some cash. This week, we’ll tackle two birds with one stone – Good Survival Horror & Nasty DRM.
Amnesia: The Dark Decent is survival horror done right. You have no weapons so you best run, Nancy. Tired of running? There’s hiding. Tired of hiding? There’s puzzles. Tired of puzzles? There’s unsettling… creatures that A) Want to taste you and B) Will drive you insane if you so much as look at them. It’s a fresh execution of an old genre, it’s cheap, and it’s available on PC, Mac, and Linux.
Not That: Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D
Resident Evil is an old horse in the survival horror stable. And the ol’ gray mare just ain’t what she used to be. Why be stealthy and conserve ammo when you can run and gun? These guys have been fighting zombies for 15 years. 15 years of being surprised by the walking dead. 15 years of picking locks, color coded keys, combining herbs, and Barry Burton talking about Jill Sandwiches. Ok that last one only happened once, but it should have happened more often. The most damning thing about Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is the DRM. Some genius at Capcom thought it was a good idea to make it so that the game hard-codes its save to a single 3DS. No sharing the game with roommates, siblings, or playing through from the beginning. Want to buy it used? Have fun not playing your new game. Seriously, pass on this one.
You owe it to yourself to spend your money on something good. If you’re looking to sleep in the utility closet for the next week with the light on, go check out Amnesia: The Dark Decent. If you are desperate for rated M 3DS game, wait for something else that doesn’t belittle you as a consumer. If you are a Resident Evil fanboy, then I’m not really going to sway you, am I?
