The Perfect Storm: RPG’s On The Horizon

Forces are brewing on the horizon, threatening to take shape as they grow stronger with each passing day of anticipation. Later this year, gamers all over the world will be locking themselves within the confines of their game rooms in the wake of what could be called the perfect storm, being unable to resist the call of their televisions and computer monitors. No matter what your role playing preference, whether it be sci-fi or fantasy, single player or MMO, once the storm hits, none of us will be able to escape it. Free time will be a thing of the past, as jobs, friends and family are all lost to negligence once the storm truly takes hold. It’s only a matter of time now…

I am referring, of course, to the coming release of Bioware’s Star Wars The Old Republic, Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo III and Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim later this year. If you have even the slightest interest in video games, and quite possibly even if you don’t, then you have heard of at least one of these games. This is an RPG line up unlike any I have seen before, and I am both excited and partially concerned to see what kind of effect it will have on my personal life, along with the countless other gamers out there like me. Once these three games are released, I will honestly have to make a strong effort to ever want to leave my computer chair again.

None can escape it...

The problem would be bad enough if only one of the titles interested me, perhaps then I would still have some small portion of my social and personal life left to salvage. Sadly (or should I say excitedly?), I have a strong interest in all three of them and will have no choice but to play them all. It is a daunting task indeed considering Skyrim is boasting to have more than three hundred hours of gameplay, and both Diablo III and The Old Republic have been in development for longer than I care to remember. There just isn’t enough gaming time in the day!

If you had to make a choice, once the storm hits, which game do you expect to draw you in the most? Perhaps you will be like me and plan to fall victim to all three. However, if you are to be consumed by the all powerful tri-force of role playing heaven, will you share with us which game you were most excited about before you set out on you journey? I only ask because, chances are, we might not ever see you again…
