Summer Slaughter: Orcs Must Die! Preview

Fantasy hack n’ slashers jump for joy and prepare for some intense button mashing action; ‘Orcs Must Die!’ by Robot Entertainment will soon be gracing our Xbox 360’s and PC’s later this summer with an Orc slaying party, the likes of which we have never seen. If you are unfamiliar with this title, Orcs Must Die! is a third person action strategy game in which players fight off legions of gibbering, filthy Orcs who are attempting to conquer your fortress. Taking on the role of a cliché sword wielding fantasy hero, you will have to come up with ways to hack, slash, flatten and incinerate and army of seemingly endless and smelly Orcs.

You will be constantly outnumbered, of course, but don’t worry! Orcs Must Die will be placing a wide variety of weapons and devastating traps at your disposal that should tip the scales in your favor. Examples include the Steam Trap, Spring Trap, Wall Blades, Floor Spikes and all sorts of other fun Orc smashing devices of ingeniously brutal design. Oh joy! You will be slaughtering so many witless Orcs that you might almost begin to pity them. Almost… As for the graphics, the game has a very vibrant and sharp style that reminds me slightly of BioWare’s Star Wars The Old Republic, but with a more comic and lighthearted feeling to it.

I love the Orc's facial expressions.

Robot Entertainment will also be releasing a single issue Orcs Must Die! prequel comic book that will tell the story of how the first heroes rose up to defend the land from these savage, green skinned monsters. Somehow I doubt that a game entitled ‘Orcs Must Die!’ will have a truly enthralling and lore enriched storyline behind it, but it could be entertaining if nothing else. Prints of the comic will be handed out during Comic-Con at the Xbox Lounge in the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego on July 23-24th, but there will also be a digital version of the comic available later this summer with the game’s release. The game itself will also be playable throughout Comic-Con 2011, so if you are lucky enough to be in attendance, make sure to drop by the Robot booth and give it a try.

Spike trap, bitches!

I saw and briefly played this game when I was at PAX East earlier this year and have been keeping a lazy eye on it ever since.  There are so many games to keep track of this year! I’m all about hack n’ slash games (having most recently been sucked in by Dungeon Fighter Online), and Orcs Must Die! seems right up my alley. The gameplay is both addictive and satisfying, I just hope that it has enough variety and lasting value to keep me coming back for more. Orcs Must Die! will be available for download on the Xbox Live Arcade and with PC retailers, such as Steam, later this summer; but you will still need to keep an eye out for the official release date.
