Grand Theft Auto Blamed For London Riots

As I write this, I can already feel the collective community roll their eyes at such absurdity, however it is making news today, and therefore I must write about it.

A London Police Constable was quoted in the Evening Standard as saying;

“When I was young it was all Pac-Man and board games. Now they’re playing Grand Theft Auto and want to live it for themselves.”

The man behind this quote remains unnamed (although I can’t understand why, when he has pearls of wisdom such as this), while his intention may have been good;

“Go home, get a takeaway and watch anything that happens on TV these are bad people who did this. Kids out of control”

To implicate Grand Theft Auto (a game where you as a player can’t actually loot or riot) is rather poor. Hopefully this is just his opinion, but if that is the case, then a clear distinction should be made. For example, “John Smith (37), a serving police constable, believes that GTA has inspired riots.” Sadly the Evening times didn’t do this, at least not on their front page, where they ran as part of the their headline:

“Children as young as ten, inspired by video game, among the looters”

Thankfully the newspaper did see sense (thanks to public pressure), and adjusted the later headline to

“Children as young as ten hunted by Police”

Games aren’t the only thing being blamed for the riots, with several major newspapers and news sites suggesting that Twitter allowed for a mob to organise and avoid police detection.

    I played GTA and the Halo games and other first person shooters hardcore. I’m a respectable member of society who helps the blind and elderly cross the road, I’m polite to my elders, I have a good University degree close to completion and many close friends. Gaming has nothing to do with people’s actions, it’s how they were brought up.

  • Anyone else see the grand theft auto v official webpage? I typed in http://gtav.com and a website pops up now for GTA V. They had on there that the game will be released in 2012, and set in Los Angeles. I really hope they don’t do LA for the game, I prefer something overseas so the game has a different feeling. Though if they did do LA it would be cool to have some rappers and cool actors in the game. Slap around a few of those bums!

    So, that constable used to run around, eating white dots and looking for ghosts after he finished building hotels on Park Place?

  • Being a big fan of survival horror games as well as open world crime games, I can say without reservation that I have never watched the news footage of riots and felt like I had missed out on being there.
