I’ll start by saying that this is the first time I’ve ever heard of All Zombies Must Die, so I had no idea what to expect. The first thing I was greeted with was a cartoony looking poster featuring the 4 stars of the game. Just as I was about to write this game off as being a game aimed at the younger crowd, Mason fired a shotgun at an oncoming zombie, and what was left was a pile of body parts and a puddle of blood. It was that exact moment that I realized that I was looking at the most adorable version of Dead Nation possible.
All Zombies Must Die is a twin-stick shooter where you and three friends sit around your living room (no online co-op yet, but it may be added later), grab a drink, and blast a few zombies together. Shooting zombies isn’t the only draw, however. There is a hilarious narrative tying all of the action together that got more than a few laughs out of me during my demo. The melee weapons have a charge attack that can lead to some funny moments (I got the “leatherface” combo for chainsawing through a group of brain-eaters), and as you go through the game, you’ll get the opportunity to upgrade your abilities so you can become a more fine-tuned undead destroyer. There’s also a crafting system that (as the name suggests) allows you to combine different materials into more powerful weapons — the flaming chainsaw is my favorite so far.
More jaded gamers may take a look at All Zombies Must Die and just see another twin-stick shooter, but what sets it apart from the pack is the truly funny moments in the story, and it’s light attitude toward itself. This is a game that only exists go give the player a good time. And when it comes down to it, there needs to be more games that are just about having fun.
Meet Jack – he’s having a bad day: the town’s overrun by zombies; he’s being hassled by his ex-girlfriend; he suspects he may be a character in a video game and, worse still, he may not even be the main character. To get through the day and reach sanctuary, he’ll have to make amends with his ex and join forces with a mad scientist and an alien and probably kill a few hundred thousand zombies on the way.
All Zombies Must Die! is an Arcade RPG: A fun, twin-stick, frenetic four-player shooter set in a top-down, tongue-in-cheek world, All Zombies Must Die pits the player and their friends against the gaming’s favourite foe: the undead menace. Packed with playful humour and references to the cult genre, the homage takes the team through the town of Deadhill, collecting powerups and blasting non-stop waves of zombies. And it’s got braaaaaains, too; AZMD features light, playful RPG elements allowing player to level up their characters, complete comical sidequests and collect items to craft new weapons.
All Zombies Must Die is scheduled to launch Fall 2011 on PSN and XBL.
