Halo 4 Creative Director Quits

Ryan Payton, one of Halo 4’s creative directors has left both the project and 343 Industries, claiming that he’s “not going to waste one more day working on something that doesn’t speak to my values.” Speaking to Kotaku he says that he has no regrets about working on Halo 4, but that he wants “to make a game that one billion people play at once, and it’s something that hits them harder than a great book or film.”

These are some very lofty ambitions, but he’s already set up his own studio called Camouflaj and has begun work on two separate games, so you’ve got to respect him for at least taking a big risk and trying, when he could have just stayed with Microsoft working on one of the biggest games around.

He also acknowledges that his ambitions may be twenty or thirty years from fruition, but none the less, as someone who values narrative above most other things in games I’ll be interested to see what he brings to the table with his new projects.

So he quit because Halo 4 ISN’T going to be “a game that one billion people play at once, and it’s something that hits them harder than a great book or film”?
