To celebrate the release of Gears of War 3 and to give you the optimal in-game boost, Kontrol Freeks is releasing a new edition of their famous FPS Freeks. The FPS Freek EPICs are not only sporting the COG and skull logo, but are a deep matte red, matching the style of Gears of War perfectly. On top of that they have functional modifications that will help you get to the top of the leaderboards.
For those who don’t know what Kontrol Freeks are; they are a whole line of controller attachments that help you in every genre, from racing, to sports, and to shooters. The FPS Freeks are specifically designed to give you perfect aim in third and first-person shooters. By raising the height of the control stick they effectively increase your range of motion by 40%. This makes aiming up shots much easier because you can control the joystick more precisely. Think of it as a joystick stacked on a joystick. They come in pairs so you can use them on both joysticks.
As a long time user I can say that FPS Freeks will help you play better. If you don’t own any Kontrol Freeks and are looking to get your first pair, or already own a set of FPS Freeks and want to get improved versions for third-person shooters, then the FPS Freek EPICs are a great choice.
The FPS Freeks are very easy to put on. They have three grips that snap right over either analogue joystick on a Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 controller, and they can be swapped on and off quite easily. They come in a very small and simple hinged plastic case and are set in a cardboard holder. Its very minimal packaging but it looks good and is useful for keeping track of them if you take them off.
The design is very similar to the standard FPS Freeks but modified in a few ways that will be beneficial to third person shooters. The grips on the outer edge of the FPS Freek EPIC’s, which are actually the raised outline of the Gears of War COG symbol, hold your thumb in the middle of the control pad better than the standard raised dots. The whole Freek also feels more concave so your thumb is sunk in more, again giving you better grip. The improved grip is important in third person shooters because you have a much wider range to cover. In a first person shooter your field of view is usually limited to 70-90 degrees, but in a third person shooter its closer to 180 degrees, meaning there is much more screen space to cover in a short amount of time. If you play third-person shooters a lot these changes, while small, will add just a bit more to your game, so I definitely recommend a purchase. The FPS Freek EPICs also work great in Call of Duty, Halo, and all other FPS games.
With many reviews of controller attachments like this people often pop them on in their favorite game and start playing. However I did the opposite, I tested them with Gears of War 2, which I haven’t played since release date, and used them in multiplayer matches so I learned to play with the Freeks right from the start. After playing for a few hours I was in the zone, and I was doing fairly well. Then to see how much the FPS Freek EPICs were helping I decided to take them off for a few matches. Wow, what a difference. The amount of fluidity FPS Freeks add to the joystick controls is amazing. I could feel how much harder it was to aim with the much lower range of motion given with the stock controller. My average score per game lowered and I was definitely missing more precise shots than before, and it was taking longer to line them up. I snapped them right back on and haven’t taken them off since. FPS Freeks will not only help you in shooters, but in every game and genre.
My favorite aspect of the EPIC Freeks are the improved grips on the bottom. Instead of the 6 small ones found on the original edition, the EPIC Freeks have only three. They still hold the Freeks on very well, but also allow you to actually get them off, something any original FPS Freek owner knows was very difficult (this design modification has also been adopted for other editions of the FPS Freek).
The visual design is also great. The red looks great when paired on the black Xbox 360 controller, and the FPS Freek Epic’s would be the perfect finishing touch on the limited edition Gears of War 3 controller.
If you are a hardcore Gears of War player or fan then the FPS Freek Epics should be an instant purchase – especially if you own the limited edition Gears of War console or controllers. They also work great in any other third-person or first-person shooter, so don’t hold back if you are worried about compatibility.
The FPS Freek EPICs are available now from KontrolFreek.com. Right now you can get a pair for only $13.99, and they are compatible with Xbox 360 controllers, DualShock 3 controllers, and a variety of third-party controllers. If you are a racing fan or sports fan also check out their other products, such as the Speed Freek, which I have used for hundreds of hours in various racing games and highly recommend.
