Sonic CD is known for many things. Engaging gameplay advances, such as the Super Peel-Out, early uses of time travel affecting gameplay, and a rocking soundtrack that screams 1990s for both America and Japan. Developed by Sonic Team concurrently with Sega Technical Institute’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the two games took diversionary paths. Beyond Metal Sonic and Amy Rose, Sonic CD didn’t add too much to the canon, but Sonic 2 added Tails, who’s gone on to be Sonic’s stalwart sidekick. The new port of Sonic CD looks to rectify things, adding Tails to the title.
Sonic CD will be available for iOS, Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and general Android release later this year. GameStop’s release of Android tablets come with exclusive-for-now games, including Sonic CD. The addition to Tails, reportedly unlocked when you beat the game once, makes him a playable character for the first time in the game. Tails was featured in the supplementary features of the original release. While he might not have the Super Peel-Out, he will feature the ability to fly in the game.
Knuckles was almost added to the original Sonic the Hedgehog via Lock-On Technology, but technical limitations (presumed to rise from Knuckles gliding over conveyor belts) prevented this. This isn’t the first time Sega’s revised older games for ports; Sonic gained his Spin Dash in certain ports of the first Sonic the Hedgehog.
Will you be high-flying as Tails when the game comes out?
