Japan has some things that just don’t have easy American equations. While teens and tweens may drool over Justin Beiber or whole bands of boys, Japan decides to go for quantity. Their “idol” groups rule popular culture, and the men and women all meet certain criteria, such as the “bad boy” or the “girl with messed up teeth”. Seriously, it’s odd. If you’ve seen some Japanese shows such as Kamen Rider or Super Sentai, much of the idols try to or actively are members of idol groups. Two characters in Kamen Rider W, Queen and Elizabeth, are portrayed by members of AKB48. This facet was recognized in the movie Kamen Rider W Forever: A to Z/The Gaia Memories of Fate, in which they acquire the A, K, and B Gaia Memories.
Capcom has decided to have fun with this concept in Japan. Their newest entry in the Sengoku Basara series, Sengoku Basara 3: Utage, features 48 playable characters from the original title. Purchasers can vote with special limited edition tickets for their favorite warrior. The winner will star in a commercial, drama CD, and special video. 11 more characters will also appear in the drama CD. All 48 characters are now members of BSR48, continuing the parody of the concept. Capcom features this contest online.
Are you a particular fan of any of these warriors? Are you a little sad that you won’t be able to cheer them on with your votes in America?
