Activision’s Bobby Kotick Questions EA’s Star Wars MMO Profitability

Activision’s CEO Bobby Kotick was a speaker at Reuters Media Summit yesterday and in typical fashion provided plenty of fodder for internet writers to dissect criticise and maybe even praise.

The quote doing the rounds is regarding rival publisher EA and BioWare’s upcoming game Star Wars theOldRepublic.

Lucas is going to be the principal beneficiary of the success of Star Wars…We’ve been in business with Lucas for a long time and the economics will always accrue to the benefit of Lucas, so I don’t really understand how the economics work for Electronic Arts

EA haven’t made any official reaction to the comments but have stated in the past that if they can get 500,000 subscribers that the game will be profitable which is less than the number of subscriptions lost by Activision Blizzards MMO in the last quarter

Kotick also spoke about Activision’s newest venture Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure and praised its performance and claimed that retailers may sell out before Christmas.

So what do you think? Has World of Warcraft run its course? Will The Old Republic be a successful challenger to the MMO Throne? In the current economic climate can any MMO survive?
