A Simple Question: The Best Current Gen Console

As the current crop of consoles move through the second half of their considerably long life cycle (for gaming consoles, anyway), we as gamers now have a good understanding of what each system is capable of.  Forget about Red Rings, flying WiiMotes, and ridiculous PS3 pricing (and no trophies!); just about everything that plagued these systems in the beginning has been addressed, and what we have now are relatively stable consoles with a great library of games, enhanced motion controls, and (in the case of PS3 and Xbox 360) competent online offerings.  As rumors of the next generation of consoles become more solid, I realized that we may be nearing the end of the current generation, and it got me thinking:

If you had to do it again, knowing what you know now, what one console would you choose as your gaming platform of choice?

For the sake of argument (and because I know this is one of the main reasons I am reluctant to move away from the Xbox 360), assume that all of your friends that you normally game with are also on the system you are choosing.  Taking that out, you are now left with choosing a system based solely on what it offers from a hardware and software perspective.  Up until a few days ago, I would have said PS3; I think the price is finally acceptable, the games are solid now, and you get a lot of bang for your buck with the free online.  However, now Microsoft is announcing that FiOS and Xbox 360 are integrating, and I can watch some of my FiOS programming on my Xbox (which is huge since I don’t have a FiOS box on my gaming TV).  If I throw this in with a solid online experience (the addition of Beacons with the upcoming update is fantastic; I can’t say more, but it will really make you closer with your friends as you see what friends are playing the games you play when you load them up), and a great controller, I feel like Xbox 360 would edge out PS3 for me (barely).  It’s a lot closer than my thoughts on this a few years ago, when PS3 wasn’t even on my radar.

What do you think? Vote above, and let us know why you picked what you picked below.

  • It’s a close one for me as well. The PS3 has a huge list of awesome exclusives that are must play! With the likes of God of War, Infamous, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, Killzone, and my favourite, Uncharted, you can’t go wrong. BUT, I would still pick the 360. It has it’s own exclusives that are amazing (Halo and Gears anybody?). Kinect is a great peripheral. Most games seem to run slightly better on the 360 (Rage, Skyrim, etc..). But my #1 reason for choosing the 360 over the PS3 is that the 360 is what it is, a gaming console. The PS3 on the other hand, is a gaming console that acts like a pc. I prefer the stream lined systems of the 360 over the PS3 anyday.

  • Let me throw this out there, what if mine is the iPhone?  It’s this generation, it has plenty of awesome games, but it just does so much more as well.

    • I was tempted to include things like Steam, iPhone and OnLive, but decided to keep it to consoles, since most everyone has at least one of them.

I think PS3 would be my choice for the blu-ray drive and upcoming PS Vita integration. Besides, I can’t get FiOS in my area (and the other cable tv and IPTV options are still up in the air or a hassle) and while the 360 does an okay job with upscaling dvds to my TV, video streaming (from ESPN and Hulu) are only decent.

dumb question… who do you like more your mom or dad?
