A Simple Question: Holiday Console Sales

The Holidays are here, and if our Holiday Shopping Guides are any indication, people are ready to spend some cash on gaming related items.  Some of these people may even be buying a new console.  I know what you’re thinking, and no, I don’t know who doesn’t already own one either (though to be fair, I still have yet to pick up a PS3.  No, I don’t know what I am waiting for).  This is a time of year where the big gaming companies like to throw around bragging rights based on their sales. Microsoft had an incredible November, selling almost double all of the other consoles, so you’d be inclined to think they would run away with December as well.  But there’s a lot of deals to be had, and Nintendo and Sony do have portable systems that can help add to the bottom line.  It brought me to this week’s question:

Which company will have the best sales numbers (units sold) for their consoles in December?

To clarify, choosing Nintendo means you think that the cumulative total of Wii, DS (if they even sell those new anymore) and 3DS will sell more than Sony’s PS3 and PSP, or Microsoft’s Xbox 360.  While I’m hesitant to pick Microsoft because Nintendo traditionally does very well in December when combining handheld sales along with consoles, I think there’s such a strong push towards Microsoft right now, that I feel as though they will continue to have a sales stranglehold on the market.  November’s sales were an early indicator of what to expect for December, and I see no reason why people will choose otherwise.  I won’t be shocked if Nintendo gets enough of a boost from portable sales to steal December, but I don’t expect Sony to challenge either company.

    I agree Tym Microsoft is making a good showing this year and their bundles are priced well.  Sony may come in third in my book, because the  PSP is just about dead and even thought their bundles are a great deal parents and consumers seem to gravitate towards Nintendo and their products and with the price tag of the 3DS they will sell well this holiday season.

    But Microsoft may push ahead with the Kinect bundle as not only do you get a 360, but the Kinect as well for a great price at that, and as consumers we always want to get either bigger, better or more when we shell out or hard earned money.

    So I say Microsoft will pull ahead and have the best numbers for console sales in December.

    I’m picking up 2 more xboxes for my children, to add to the 2 I already own.  (not counting the dead one out in the garage)

    I’m going with Sony because in my opinion, most people who want a Wii already own one and the 3ds is crap so Nintendo’s sales will be weak. Microsoft’s sales will be good, but like the Wii, a lot of people already own an Xbox. Sone on the other hand, is just hitting their stride in terms of awesome exclusives (Infamous 2, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3,  Killzone 3…) and now is the time to finally pick a PS3 up if you don’t already have one.
