There’s an odd battle going on in video games. Constantly striving for equality in game importance, female game characters have a hard battle. For every time Samus saves the universe, a princess needs saving. For every time Katawa Shoujo reminds you that girls are people too (and make you feel emotions), GalGun makes you remember that girls can be objectified (and make you feel a fully different set of emotions). In the fighting realm, they’ve had one of their hardest battles, largely being sexualized with unrealistic proportions and costumes, especially for fighting.
We don’t know the path that the newly announced title, Girl Fight, will take. Microprose and Kung Fu Factory have announced the title, only with a logo, for release this spring on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 digital distribution networks. The full press release includes such phrases as
Get Ready to Lick the Competition
With hair flying, long legs kicking and the ear-piercing shrill of deadly vixens, Girl Fight is a unique all-female, fast-paced spin on arcade-style fighting games.
we’re predisposed to thinking the girls are less Gina Carrano and more Ikki Tousen.
Still, who knows. Maybe a bit of objectification can be fun, if not horribly damaging to the appearance of gamers in the mass media.
