Sonic the Hedgehog has always had an odd love life. In the games, Amy Rose has always chased after the blue blur, largely unsuccessfully. In the 2006 title, Sonic’s kiss with a human princess was considered one of the biggest missteps. In the Archie series, his on-again, off-again relationship with Princess Sally Acorn has driven much of the supplemental drama. Other characters, like Bunnie Rabbot and Antoine D’Coolette have gone to have successful relationships, while Geoffrey St. John and Hershey the Cat were only split by his treacherous ways and her death (and, well, Ken Penders successfully gaining the rights to the latter).
Archie has collected many of these stories over the years, and released them in a digital-exclusive collection. Running for $3.99 in Archie’s Sonic app on iOS, Sonic The Hedgehog: Love Stinks! appears to collect the marriage of Antoine and Bunnie, the lust of Scourge and Fiona, and Sonic’s run-ins with Amy and Sally. With SEGA having large restrictions on the amount of emotion the speedster can have (going so far as to having artists reduce tears when someone dies), it’s not surprising that more of the relationship drama has happened with characters they don’t own outright.
Have you ever wondered what goes on in the hearts of hedgehogs?
