Never heard of the game? Maybe it’s due to the fact that it has recently undergone a name change. Formerly known as the ‘True Crime’ franchise, Sleeping Dogs has found both a new home and momentum behind their ongoing project. Before United Front Games could even poise its title to stand in a lineup with competitors they lost their publishing and Activision pulled the plug on the title. Square Enix London Studios, a division of Square Enix Europe (formerly Eidos) swooped in to save the day. Judging from the impressive screenshots and recent demos to media, this seems to have been a wise choice.
The story plot follows Wei Shen, an Asian-American detective assigned to infiltrate and take down the Triad crime ring in Hong Kong. Rumored to be a open-world, sandbox concept game, you can imagine the sheer velocity that might be tied to roaming a video game version of Hong Kong. Awesome is the only word that comes to my mind.
While it may or may not be able to compete with the vaunted Grand Theft Auto series, there still should be room for Sleeping Dogs to squeeze in line behind Saint’s Row. Sleeping Dogs will be released on 360, PS3, and PC later this year (rumored around August). Time will tell if this will be a success or not but I’m still drooling at the thought of an open world Hong Kong.
