Game Developers Choice Awards Nominees Revealed

This year will see the 13th annual Game Developers Choice Awards and the first one without comedian Jay Mohr hosting since what feels like forever (in reality, he’s only been rocking the mic since 2006) as Chris Hardwick has that duty now. Finalist nominees have just been announced and they’re what you would expect for the most part, but it’s also validating. It’s validating in the sense that there is a rather solid mix of indie, downloadable, and mainstream games up for a swath of awards. It could be a sign that the industry is growing up and those distinctions have begun to mean little else beyond where you go to obtain those particular games, or it could just be a sign that people love Journey.

Then again, those two things are hardly mutually exclusive, but I digress.

Thatgamecompany’s Journey actually has ended up with six nominations, the most of the year, while Dishonored from Arkane Studios follows close behind with four nominations. Fireproof Games’ The Room is up for both Best Debut and Best Handheld/Mobile Game, the first time an iOS (or Android) game has been nominated for anything outside of the handheld/mobile-specific category since 2010 when Tiger Style Games’ Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor was up for Best Debut as well.

Among the big boy triple-A titles, indie darlings FTL: Faster Than Light, The Mark of the Ninja, The Unfinished Swan, and Dust: An Elysian Tale are all also up for awards. I expect Journey to take home several awards and Dishonored to win Best Game Design. I view that category much like the Academy Awards Best Director category; it’s not necessarily the best directing but most directing, and Dishonored probably has the most game design.
